Best Off-Road Caravanning & Camping Areas in South Australia

Visiting the mall, the movie theatre, or the zoo are great pastimes, but there simply can’t be an experience that beats going to off-beat places, that too in your very own caravan! Today Aussies are not shying away from not only visiting the mainstream places of interest in the country, but they are also keen on exploring ‘the road not taken’ in their neighborhood and all the beautiful sights it has to offer.

Lyfe RV at Perlubie Beach

Today we bring to you a list of some of the most incredible places in South Australia you can visit in your caravan. Whether you’ve caught a beach bug or you’re a forest dweller, we have got you covered.

Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park

Originally a gypsum mine, this place is now a protected national park, as the name suggests. It is located at the very bottom of the Yorke Peninsula. If you choose to camp here, you’ll get to enjoy the added perks of shipwrecks, lighthouses, and also the opportunity to go fishing. On top of this, it wouldn’t be unusual at all if a herd of emus passes you by while you relax outside your caravan. Few places can get better than this!

  • Rich wildlife
  • Shipwrecks
  • Lighthouses
  • Fishing
  • 4-hour drive from Adelaide

Lipson Cove Campground

Get ready to be greeted by splashes of aquamarine hues as you drive up the last hill right above Lipson Cove and enter the island. The campground is quite close to the Tumby Bay in the Eyre Peninsula. You can reach it by taking a dirt road that will take you through farmland right down to the beach.

The island is right off the beach, and the campsites situated on the beach overlook the picturesque island and amazingly blue waters of the ocean. You can fish from the beach or you can reach the island as well when the tides are low and fish from there while enjoying the view of dolphins frisking around.

Tumby Bay nearby is a must visit with its great street art and graffiti and also some of the tastiest fish.

  • Graffiti
  • 7-hour drive from Adelaide

Perlubie Beach Campground

This is one of our most favorite picks in the list. You would absolutely love it if you’re a beach person, and even otherwise. Once you reach Perlubie you’ll be greeted by a vast expanse of calm, crystal clear sea. You will get a sea view literally at your doorstep without paying the price of one, which is $10 per night through an honesty box system. Perlubie offers beachfront camping, so park your caravan right at the shore and enjoy the breathtaking view from the comfort of your RV.

This spot is situated towards the west of the Eyre Peninsula coastline close to Streaky Bay. Needless to say it’s heaven for seafood connoisseurs, who shouldn’t miss out on getting their hands on snapper or crab. You can also bring your BBQ and enjoy the fresh fruit… err fish of your labor with your family.

  • Beachfront camping
  • Seafood
  • Flush toilets available
  • 8-hour drive from Adelaide

Cable Bay Campground in Innes National Park, Yorke Peninsula

Another gem from the Yorke Peninsula, Cable Bay Campground is located at the southern side of it and is the best of both worlds. You’ll not only witness stunning, beautiful beaches with turquoise waters but you can also enjoy magnificent cliffs. It is a truly offbeat spot as you will hardly find another soul there, which contributes to the rich camping experience. It also offers one of the best sunrises, with the sun rising over the Southern Spencer Gulf Marine Park.

You can also visit the ancient town of Inneston close by or explore the Ethel shipwreck and revisit a chapter in history. If you are an avid surfer, this place is perfect for you.

  • Sea view
  • Cliffs
  • Ethel shipwreck
  • Inneston ghost town
  • 4-hour drive from Adelaide

Kuitpo Forest in Fleurieu Peninsula

Kuitpo forest has 23 campsites in total and is rich with native bushland and plantations spread across 3,600 hectares. You can park your RV right in the woodlands filled with beautiful Eucalyptus trees. Explore the Chookarloo hiking trail that is 1.5 km away from the Kuitpo Forest Information Centre. We promise you’ll get the true offbeat experience in this campground.

This campground is ideal for camping overnight and huddling around a bonfire on a Winter night. You can just lie down and stargaze or you can also don your adventure hat and explore the Heysen walking trail, where you might also stumble upon some stunning fairy mushrooms that seem to come right out of a fairytale!

  • Native bushland
  • Hiking trails
  • Picnic areas
  • Pit toilet
  • Rich with local flora and fauna
  • 1-hour drive from Adelaide
